According to recent research by Halifax, house sales in the North of England outperformed the South in the first six months of the year.
Leigh, Rugeley and Houghton Le Spring were three of the four biggest rises in sales. The largest was Bury, in Greater Manchester, where sales had risen by 44%.
Meanwhile, 9 out of 10 of the towns where the biggest fall in property sales have been recorded are located in the South of England. The largest drop can be seen in Hoddesdon, in Herefordshire, where sales have fallen by 39%.
A close second is Buckingham at 34%. The tenth town to report a steep drop is Aberdare in Wales, where there has been a 33% reduction in sales.
These figures reflect a reversal of 2010, where the housing market in Southern England outperformed the North. Sales have declined by 2.2% in the North of England, by 4.8% in the North-West and by 4.9% in the West Midlands. The greatest isolated falls have been seen in London, with a 11.3% drop. Overall, property sales fell by 8.7% across England and Wales.
