Conservatory 'could add significant value'

Homeowners may want to consider investing in a home improvements loan after it was claimed that a conservatory could significantly increase the value of a property.

According to SmartNewHomes.com, the add-on room would create enough extra space to a house to make it more attractive to potential buyers and even push the price up.

Steve Lees, head of marketing at the firm, said a conservatory is potentially a whole extra room and will therefore add space "by definition".

"People will be doing that, in terms of [building] extensions or conservatories to have extra space rather than move to a bigger home…It will add a level of value to the house," he added.

Mr Lees also insisted that a conservatory did not necessarily have to increase a homeowner's carbon footprint, with modern building methods meaning the extra space can be an environmentally-friendly move.

Separate research by the Halifax revealed that UK homeowners are currently adding up to £5,000 to the value of their homes by adding improvements and renovating their homes themselves through carrying out DIY.
